The ability to visualise information plays an increasing role within the world of business intelligence. Showing such information by way of interactive dashboards with various types of graphs or geographical maps, offers a much quicker insight in how (a specific part of) an organisation is performing.

Many new vendors, such as Tableau and Qlik, have seized on this development. But the market also offers solutions from more established business intelligence vendors, such as SAP (BusinessObjects) and IBM (Cognos).

For a while now, Microsoft has also been active on the business intelligence market. The SQL Server database solution offers an increasing array of possibilities, for example with Reporting, Analysis and Integration Services (SSRS, SSAS, SSIS).

Microsoft Power BI came on the market in 2013. This is a cloud solution which mainly focuses on data visualisations. Its development has speeded up since 2015 and Power BI is quickly becoming a mature solution. This is clearly expressed in the release policy (with new versions released each month, offering new functionality and improvements) and the fact that the application is open to external third parties to develop their own visualisations.

What are the advantages of Power BI compared to other solutions? Mainly pricing and the licensing policy. There is even a free version with a lot of functionality and possible uses. Then there is a paid version, costing EUR 9 per user per month, making it much cheaper than any other vendor. It also offers – as standard – online service solutions on e.g. SalesForce.com, Google Analytics, Facebook, MailChimp and many other popular web solutions.

What we can do with Power BI

We have already built Power BI solutions for a number of our customers, adding on to UNIT4 Financials and Icorp. Besides, we have created a solution for a customer that uses our Reporting Hub software for their reporting, forecasting and consolidation requirements. A customer in the entertainment industry uses a system we have built on online services, such as Google Analytics and Facebook, enabling them to monitor certain marketing drives.
